I have a few older small engines (Kholer, Briggs) that call for 30 wt oil. Local auto parts guy says it's getting harder to find (everything
is multi-visc), though he had some. He says to go 10-30 or even 20-50. I know these old engines are loose, but I'm skeptical. What are you
guys running in these older engines? I'm in Colorado at 6300 feet - cold winters, hot summers.

Thanks,
Cliff

Every time I change the oil on something I turn the empty container over into a funnel and drain every last drop into a gallon jug. 5-30, 10-30, 10-40, 15-40, 20-50. Some synthetic, some not. That's what goes into my small engines.

Where I work we still have 30wt. in Briggs and Stratton, Kohler and Kawasaki brands. $11-ish a quart. And the small engine oil still has the zinc in it.

If you have to, you can go to 10w40 or 20w50. I wouldn't go to 10w30 or thinner unless I was blowing snow. The thinner viscosity oils will be consumed more quickly as the engine runs.

If mfg calls for 30 wt above freezing they get this

I have 100 gallons of Kendall 20w/50. That's what goes in all my old tractors and small engines and has for years. Also use it for chain lube in my chain saws.

All of the farm fleet type stores around here have straight 30W in both detergent and non detergent.

Everything on the place gets 15w-40. It rarly gets below 20f but 100f+ is common. If it were colder I'd go to 10w-30 in Winter. I've run multi-vis oil for the passed 50 years.

The largest part of small equipment engines for the past 25 years has called for 10W30. A10w30 is a cleaner oil due to not having the extra additives to make it a 40 weight at operating temperatures.

10W30.. What does that mean??

It means it flows like a 10 weight when cold and like a 30 weight at operating temperature.

When I was a teen you had 2 choices at my local suburban Texaco....Havoline 20 or 30. Anyway, the owner had a
barrel where he would punch the adapter in the top of a can, install the can of oil in a customer's car, pull the adapter
out and set the empty can upside down on the rack to drain into the barrel. Have no idea as to what he did with the
oil.

Oh, the oil was HD. Don't recall seeing any ND but it was probably still around....leftovers from that era.

I use to buy Kohler 30 weight at Local lawn garden vendor. They stock the Kohler 10w30 now . I got the Kawasaki 30 weight last time for our mower cause it was the 30 wt they stocked now.
