Economy, 71, 14hp regulator/rectifier

I am working on a 71 1614 basket case. I also have a 72 2414. I have noticed that the terminals on the regulator/rectifier are not labeled the same. They appear to be the same model regulator/rectifier though. On the 72 which is pretty original and running well the two AC terminals are side by side and about 5/8 from the mounting surface. The B+ terminal is about 3/16 from the mounting surface. The regulator/rectifier from the 71 basket case has the single, close to the mounting surface terminal labeled AC and one of the two other, 5/8 from the mounting surface terminals is labeled for the B+. I haven't seen other regulator/rectifiers labeled like this in looking at pictures on the internet. Anyone have any experience with this? Possibly mislabeled at the factory? Thanks for any information or opinions. Tom

Economy and Kohler used at least a half dozen different types if post some pictures it would be easier to see what your asking

Just by chance I happened to be looking through a manual I picked up a while back, SMALL TRACTOR SERVICE MANUAL, VOLLUME 2 and there in the Kohler section was a diagram of this R/R with a note that the terminals in question can be labeled either way and to check before assuming. So I will believe the labels on the terminals are correct.

You could make this easier and buy one of the Chinese small engine voltage
regulators online. They are copies of the regulator used on JD and IHC LGT's
and most other brands.

The two wires from under the flywheel go to the outside of three lugs on the
regulator and AC comes from the middle lug.

Before you go throwing money at this - does the engine run?
Diagnosing the voltage regulator requires a running engine.
You should have AC voltage in the mid-twenties to the mid-thirties across the AC terminals.
When you have AC but no DC at the middle/DC terminal, then you replace the VR.

The VR has to be connected to the battery these reulators require a 1 amp draw to work so after testing for AC volts the B+ terminal must be connected to the electrical system and the regulated has to have a good ground or it won't work

Thanks for the replies with information on testing. The engine ran a few seconds on a shot of either. Next to hook up a tank and let it run for a while. The oil it had was terrible so after running for a little while and if all else is well another oil change is due. The couple of seconds it ran it sounded good so I am hopeful. The only thing so far on this tractor I haven't had apart and fixed or adjusted is the differential and engine. It was beat but I am hopeful that it will be a good tractor.
