Usually on tractor talk new to this forum, didnt want to hyjack the post below.I have a 2004 kubota zg 23 with 1100 hrs showing (bought it used cant be sure of hours)it looks to be pouring oil from the rear seal.is this a common problem?do I fix it or junk it?;thing is the hydraulic pump/drive is fine now but dont want to spend too much on the motor if the hydraulics might go soon.experiences,advice?..it runs fine otherwise

I am not faimiliar with that engine when used in a Kubota. I am guessing the oil is coming out the PTO seal and it is a horizontal shaft engine?

Whether to fix or junk it depends on what care it got in the past 1100 hours. If the engine is in good shape otherwise-no smoke, good compression, etc. then that seal, if it is the one I am thinking it is, is not that much $. The real issue is what has to be done to change it? And you are looking at the machine and I am not.

If you can do the work yourself you might be ahead to put the seal in and then wait and see how long before something else fails.

P.S. If it is a horizontal engine, our supplier says those engines are only built to order and there is something like a two or three month wait to get a new one.

Yes it is a horizontal engine being a zero turn.no smoke, plenty of power and the cutting deck is fine.I am concerned being its leaking so bad at the seal if its just a wore out seal or wear in the shaft,or rear main bearing .guess Ill just have to take it apart to see.

I had a 20 hp with a bad seal(horizontal shaft) I popped the old seal out with a screwdriver and drove on the new one. Worked fine no leak.

Remove the old seal by prying with a screwdriver or drill a small hole and use a woodscrew and pull with a claw hammer. I've done both. I would not worry about a Kubota ZG 23 with 1100 hours they are pretty much bullet proof and will last well into 3000 hours. I had a ZG 20 that i put on over 1000 hours and the second owner has put many more than that on it.
