JD 755 compact utility trator

I went with a friend to look at a John Deere 755 that he was thanking about getting. The tractor looked like it had not been run in quite awhile and while we was looking at it he started turning the steering wheel and turned with little restaurants and wheels not turning. We could turn it back and fourth with little efforts. It has power steering, with the motor not running is it correct for the steering wheel to turn like that? Thanks

IS the steering arm coming out of the gearbox moving when your turn the steering wheel? If not, something may be broken in the steering gearbox. Most systems will allow you to manually steer it with considerable extra effort.
Everything I've ever sat on that had power steering would still steer with the engine off, just took a lot more effort to do it.

That what I was thanking , I did not get down on the ground and look under the mower. After getting home and looking at JD parts on line the power steering system looks thought to work on.

I am not familiar with that model, but lots of tractors are full hydrostatic steering and there is no connection between the steering wheel
and the steering cylinder except for the oil that pushes from the valve/motor under the steering wheel to the cylinder. If that style sits
long enough, the oil leaks back to the reservoir and they won't steer until the engine is started and oil is pumped back into the steering
circuit.

We have an 855 and the steering will not
work if it has not been run recently. If it
was running and you turn it off the steering
may slightly try to work until the pressure
bleeds off. It is hydrostatic power steering
not just power assist.

Looks like it suffers from the powder coating failures Deere experienced in that era. But this is a good little tractor, size and power wise. I wouldn't worry about the steering as the full hydrostatic doesn't fail often. I have a 455 with the same system. still working fine.
