Gravely Anyone?

I really like Gravely walk behind tractors. I have a Commercial 10 and a 5660. The Commercial 10 has a finish mower on it, but I also have a snow blade for it. The 5660 has a 30 brush mower. For ten horsepower tractors they're hard to beat. Moreover, like old farm tractors, these old pieces of heavy metal are still going after 30 and 20 years, and there are not many garden tractors made today that I feel confident would last like that. I used the Commercial 10 for a couple of hours this morning.

I'm also a fan of old Gravely two wheel tractors. Old age and bad feet/legs have me confined to using them with a riding sulky now.

I'm a little confused about your comment 30 and 20 years. As I recall the Commercial 10 came out in 1966 and was soon replaced by model 10A (which had a lower ground speed.) I think my Commercial 10A is a 1973 model. The Commercial series was replaced by the 500 series sometime in the late 1970's, and the 5000 series came out in about 1980. I have a Profession 10 and a Professional 12 that are both 1987 models and they are now 35 years old.

My rural property is getting overgrown with autumn olive bushes. Having front mounted mower on a walk (or ride with a sulky) behind tractor is great for mowing under the bushes. The major downsides I've found is that a walk behind tractor with an attachment up front and a sulky behind has a long turning radius, takes a fair amount or room to store, and has very low ground clearance (making it easy to hang up in rutty or soft ground.)

I had a gravely tractor 12 horse Kohler 8122 I think no hydraulic .
That was the most hD tractors made. I used to pull it ,did well but could not get weight off to pull 950 . Was out class by cub cadet .
I tried .
Would liked to had it back with out all pulling modifications. Much better lawn tractor than pullers .

Gravely's are nice, but I'll take my 30 and 34 year old Kubotas over them any day. I like riding and getting twice the work for 1/2 the fuel. Much warmer in the snow also.

My uncle was a Gravely dealer in the 70's so I got to play with a lot of them. We had two D or L models when I was a kid. Hand start. I have a 4 wheel, 16hp 8136B that I bought new in 1983 and is still going strong.
