4 HP Tecumseh on a Lawn Boy. Starts on the first pull. The problem is after it
warms up it will start smoking bad, then it clears up and runs ok for a little
bit, and then bogs down and starts smoking again. The carb is new and that is
the only thing I have done to this free to me mower. I Have never seen this
before.

Too much oil maybe? Not implying you dont know what yer doing, but Ive seen that cause those symptoms. Also, check that the crankcase breather aint stopped up with dirt or what all.

Assuming it's a 4 stroke engine? What color smoke? Black, too much fuel or blueish white like it's burning oil? I have several LawnBoy mowers, but mine are all 2 stroke.

Two/three things you can try:

1. If oil is over 'full' mark on dipstick, or if it 'feels' like gasoline, or looks thin, it probably has gas in it. Change it. 30wt or 10w40, not some of that ultra thin automotive oil.

2. There is probably a crankcase breather hose from the crankcase to the back of the air cleaner. remove it from the air cleaner and run it and see if it smokes from this tube or if oil drips from this tube while it is running. If it does, its either a broken/damaged crankcase breather valve or the piston rings are just worn out and you are getting too much combustion pressure down past the rings into the crankcase.

I ll look into the breather. It s strange to me that it runs fine and then it smokes(oil) and then it will run alright for a bit. I have only used this thing at the river camp. The first mowing would have been hard for any mower, this week it was just grass. It seems that anything but flat ground is the problem. That would lead back to the breather. Thanks guys we will see what it looks like this week.
