Briggs and Stratton Vanguard in Simplicity Conquest

I have a 16 hp Vanguard vertical shaft in a 2003 Simplicity Conquest that has carburetor issues. On line research shows that the carb is NLA and the rebuild kit at Partstree is about $155 plus shipping and doesnt include the float or shutoff solenoid. Yikes! Anybody know any alternatives?

Get the carburetor part number and 'google' it. You should be able to look it up yourself on Parts Tree or some other website.

The last time I fixed a carburetor on a Vanguard, I used a kit from China.

The question at this point time is how long do the Chinese needle valves last with ethanol gas.

I have bought 2 carburetors for Tecumseh engines lately for under $20 each, one of the kits came with fuel and air filter, spark plug, and the carb, under $30, free shipping! everything fit perfect and the engines started right up. I would thing there would be something available for you.

Yes, I believe I can get the part numbers on partstree. I use ethanol free gas and stabil on all my small engine equipment, so maybe the needle valve will be ok. Ill see what I can do just buying the parts I need. Carb actually doesnt look bad at all on the inside but oring on bowl is shot and the solenoid valve wire was either broken or chewed off right where it enters the solenoid. Also found the needle valve retainer in the bottom of the bowl. Float arms got damaged when I removed it because the pin the float pivots on was stuck. Thanks for the input.

So, with all your precautions and expensive gas, and snake oil, your having all these problems? We use nothing but E-10 in all of our 4 -stroke engines, no snake oil, and no problems!

Well, most of the reason for the non ethanol gas and stabil is because I keep a fair amount of gas around for my generator and it doesnt get much use, so I like to be able to count on gas that might be a year old. I cycle the oldest gas through the small engines. It works for me. I dont think the Vanguard carb is suffering from bad gas, I think the solenoid wire might have been chewed by a critter and since I opened up the carb it needs a few new parts. Its 17 years old after all.
