John Deere 318 Honda V-Twin Stater Problem

Hello Everyone,
I picked up a John Deere 318 with a V-Twin Honda Replacement engine. The charging indicator light came on, so I did the normal checks and so far I found that there is no ac voltage coming out of the stator. I do not have a clue which Honda engine it is and any of the stickers on the engine do not tell me anything. That being said, I really didnt want to pull the engine until I have the new replacement stater in hand. It is better for me to do it all at once, so I dont forget anything. So, I need to find out how to identify the engine if possible before hand. Also can anyone tell me how many amps that the original Onan engine stater have? Is there a higher amperage stater available?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Jack

Honda has their serial number stamped into the block on all their engines that I am familiar with. The catch in your case is the number is near the starter on V-twins. So you may have to pull the engine just to get where you can see the number.

The number will be something like 5 letters, then seven numbers, then near that, above or below, should be three or four more letters and numbers. The second set of letters and numbers may end with an Asterisk, it looks like an X.

If you have that number, I would guess any servicing Honda dealer could tell you what engine it is and get you a new stator for it. Maybe they can't tell you the horsepower, but they can tell you the CC displacement.

Also, make sure the magnets are secure to the flywheel. Sometimes (on other engines at least) they come loose from the flywheel and stick to the stator.

T.R.K. I think you may be right on the magnets. Do you know what the ohms resistance value, or at least an idea on what it would be on my honda stater. Thanks for your input so far. Jack
