JD 318 surging B43G engine

My 318 started surging after I installed an electric fuel pump to aid quick starting. It definitely helps with the starting, now almost instantly. However, I must have dislodged something and it is now plugging a jet in the carb, causing it to surge. I can get rid of the surge by use of the choke. Seems the same choke setting works for low idle and high idle. I have only one adjustable screw for mixture on the front of the carb. Doesn't seem to make any difference on the surging or running. Looking at the PC there is another fixed jet behind a plug, or a high altitude adjustable screw and jet could be installed. Mine just has a plug. Any advantage/need of installing the adjustable one? Altitude is only 800 feet.

Which jet or adjustment is for high idle and other for low idle?

Before I do any of that, can I get access to clean anything by removing the top of the carb?

Thanks for any help.

The idle jet is plugged, a common SCOURGE of those carburetors. The brass idle jet/tube can be removed & cleaned after taking the top part of the carb off. Probably 'tube vids of that, I can post more details later if you need more assistance. I have cleaned out 3 of them in the last few weeks.

They sure run nice after that!

Also, there's a tiny aluminum Welch plug in the idle circuit that can leak or get dislodged.

(quoted from post at 19:24:11 09/28/21) Wore out, is the welch plug visible after I remove the top of the carb?

Thanks for the details!

Roger

Welch plug is EXTERNAL, low down on the front/PTO side of the carburetor.
