I have a 6 Hp vertical engine on a Huge old Montgomery-Wards Tiller. It is Model 143702. Type# 503560 and code #19700. I have been trying to find date and parts list
but numbers don't seem to match other B&S engine information. Not sure about this one as tiller is seized up and just moving it around seems to be maybe a reason to go
more modern?? Any help on date?? Cleddy

Did you even look at the "wayback machine" link to the old ASECC site I previously posted?

Or was it not helpful?

Yes I did look at that link and it was very helpful on a couple other engines I have. I am sorry that I hadn't acknowledged the help. I have a 9Hp horizontal 23A
engine and was able to find the exact age (June 1958) with the serial number. Was also surprised to find all the information on Johnson Iron Horse washing machine
engines. When I was young that is all we had around the farm and we tried building mowers, bikes, go-karts and everything with a Johnson Iron Horse engine which had
almost no power. That what got me hooked on having about 20 engines around to play with. Thanks again for your help. Cleddy

If I understand it correctly this B&S Engine with model #143702 is 14 series and the serial number (19700) is between June (18725 and July(21868) of 1948. I find it
hard to believe it could be that old but it does have an Aluminum tag on the engine and numbers are clearly stamped. I been trying to confirm the information and the
link you provided has been very helpful. Thanks for the help. Cleddy

I think you are right. This is an Aluminum block which Briggs&Stratton came out with in 1953 and after so 1948 Aluminum block Garden Tiller is not a reasonable solution.Cleddy

Yeah I checked out and it not there. This is aluminum block with Carburator on opposite of gravity feed gas tank. The most popular Briggs & Stratton Engines were Cast
Iron block and Horizontal shaft. Early Aluminum block Vertical shaft must have been juke as searching tillers in early late 60'Manufacturers went back to Horizontal
shaft.
Doesn't matter to much as the Tiller is about 32 wide and all one person can do to move it around. Not a good update to replace the popular Wheel Horse equipment
that Montgomery Ward & Sears &Roebuck(Davis Bradley} came out with in the 50 & Early 60'S. Cleddy
