JD 345 Smoking

I have a JD 345 lawn mower that I think has the Kawasaki FD611V or FD590V engine. I need to confirm. When it is running it will be running fine then all of the sudden start blowing thick white smoke then shortly quit smoking and run ok again. I have noticed it has started fouling plugs badly. I suspect piston rings like you would in a bigger engine but I have never seen one blow that much thick white smoke then suddenly clear up. It literally looks like the old mosquito fogger trucks when it does it. Also can it be rebuilt. I'm not seeming to be able to see a lot of sources for parts or overhaul kits for the 611 or 590 kawasaki engine on line.

First thing, have you checked that the crankcase is not overfull and the oil diluted with gasoline?

A failed fuel pump can cause this, or carb issues.

Just a thought - my 345 ended up blowing a head. Not head gasket, but the head itself. I don't remember if there were any symptoms before hand. But all of a sudden it started blowing white smoke and died, would not start. Figured head gasket, but the dealer had to replace one of the heads. The other side is still fine - around 1500 hrs.

No idea - I would assume like any other engine you put a tester in the plug hole. Was not an issue for me - I had zero compression apparently all at once.
