Onan P218G Fuel to combustion chamber

I have a Onan P218G and having trouble getting fuel to combustion chamber. Fuel Pump is new and working. Carb has been rebuilt. Any other things to check?

I am guessing that your engine is not running.

What things have you tried to determine that you are not getting fuel to the combustion chamber?

Have the valves ever been adjusted? Those engines tend to hammer the valve seats out of them if the valves are not in spec.

I have rebuilt carburetor and replaced fuel pump. When I try to start it it will sputter and start. It will run poorly until its starts getting hot then quits. When I try to restart, it will then backfire and sputter. I've also tried choking it while starting, then pulled the plugs and both are dry. The compression in both cylinders is around 120 psi. Currently have engine out of tractor and I'm repairing the flyball spacer and replacing the ignition module. Previous owner had put points in this P218G engine. I don't think that was factory original??

Well, either you have a compression or a spark issue. Either insufficient valve clearance or losing spark could be the case if it cuts off
when hot. When it cuts off see if you have spark at one of the plug wires. Leave the other wire on the other plug. I learned that the hard
way. If you pull both off at once, you will probably never see a spark.

Also check the condition of the plug wires themselves. I recall that really screwed me up once. One wire was burnt off about 3/8 or 1/2"
up in the insulation and sometimes the spark would not jump that gap.

While you have it apart, it would not hurt to pull the valve covers and check the tappet clearance.

It could also be a leaky seal between the halves of the intake manifold. Google that, I have never fixed one.

Something might be worth checking. The condenser goes to the negative (-) side of the coil for the B43, points engines. The condenser goes to the positive (+) side of the coil with the P218, ignition module engines.
