GT235 poor design for tie rod

I like this lawn tractor, however the tie rod that goes fron front tire to front tire fell apart. The rod end wore out and ball came out of socket. The
problem is that the socket is IN the end of the rod. There is no replaceable rod end. I have to buy a whole new tie rod? cost 28$...!!
The drag link does have a replaceable rod end.
Any suggestions here on repair rather than replacement?
I am thinking about using a 7/16 rod, cut threads on each end, and use ball and socket rod ends like those on my old CubCadet. Or, even
using Heim joints. The rod does bend on each end.

So, how many years/hours did you get out of your "consumer grade" lawn mower 'til this happened?

For $28 you can't save a lot by fabbing up an "improved version" from new parts, IMHO.

Sometimes, you just gotta "pay the piper" and move on.

(Disclaimer) Of course, I'd probably dip into my used parts inventory (AKA, junk pile) and waste some time making the problem go away! (YAMMV!)

I think your drag link has 2 replaceable ends. Couldn't you take 2 ends like that and weld them onto your tie rod. I have JD111 and my drag link only has one replaceable end so when mine fell apart I purchased the replaceable end and welded it to the other end of drag link.
I also drill a small hole so I can grease the joint with my chain saw bar grease gun.
I have also found that not all ends are the same hardness. For $28.00 for the assembly I might be tempted to buy the assembly and move on to the next battle.

There aren't many OEM parts that cost $28.00 or less. Need to pry open your wallet. Monkeying around trying to cobble something together ain't worth it sometimes.

I have fixed those by splitting a flat washer and welding it to the socket, with the ball contained. Shoot some grease into it and it will last a long time.

7/16"?? Most likely would be cold rolled steel. You start putting bends in it and it will not hold up to long on a mower.

1/2" ID .125 dom bent with threaded inserts for male threaded tie rods would be a better investment.

Found out one thing about Home Depot John Deeres...

All you need to replace the deck hangers is a couple of ole metal coat hangers..
