Took my old fuel filter off, not paying attnetion to the way it was mounted. The new filter is round clear plasitc. The filter in it is totaly round and atached to one of te housing the other end of the paper filter inside the plastic is capped with metal and has a little distance between it and the end of the plactis housing. What is the correct way to mount it, it has no arrow to signafiy the direction of flow.
Thanks,
Bill

You mount a clear filter so that you can see trash coming from the tank in the outside of the element.

So in your case, the end the filter element is fastened to goes toward the carburetor. The fuel will flow around the element, through the element, and from there to the carburetor.

t.r.k., I agree with you. On the other hand, if the fuel tank isn't completely fouled, the filter will work either way.

Well sure it will work either way.
But...............
The plastic is clear for a reason........to see how dirty the filter is so you have a good idea of when to change it.
And you get to see the crap coming out of the tank too.

Which type? The little red one only has a screen in it. The clear plastic you have just follow the arrow. The wrong way around will give you only a small filter surface area. The correct way around collects dirt on the outside of the filter. Much much more surface area. Question answered.

Just to add a little. Couple of years ago I purchased an old Eagle safty can at the flea market. What was not noticed the can had a tinny bit of old gas turned to glue. In that gooey mess was a load of pepper size rust. Lucky for me that fuel filter was in the line. Had to flush the tank several times and change out those little filters 3 times till everything cleared up. Just for giggles cut the filters open and remove the element. Cut it open and spread it out. You will not believe how much crud was trapped in the fiber. They really do work.

You are absolutely correct. But you won't be able to see trash in the filter coming down the line from the tank. It will be inside the element.

I always use a fill funnel that has the water stop screen in the bottom.

Makes the inline filter last longer by catching a lot of debris that might be in the fuel from whatever the source.
