Do you mean a GT235? I have an (older) '97 GT275 with the 17 hp Kaw engine. It's a torque beast. Much better engine in my mind than the 17 hp Kaw twin in my newer X300. It smokes a bit on start up but uses very little oil for a motor with that age on it. I think part of it is an oil pan leak onto the muffler. Bought it at an on-line auction from the original owner that used it on a large suburban lot so it wasn't abused. No experience with the 18 hp single in the GT235 but if it's as good as what I have, it should be very good for you. Note that according to Tractordata.com that they used a Briggs in the GT235 until 2003.

Let us know if you get it, pics always good too!

Oops, looked closer at tractordata and the GT235 is a two cylinder engine, probably more like the one in my '07 X300. Still a decent engine, starts right up with a little smoke (840 hrs. on the clock) and does run quieter than the single cyl. Kaw in the GT275. Don't think you can go too far wrong if it's in decent shape and you don't have to pay too much for it. I'm no JD fan-boy but have respect for the brand and how well built they seem to be.
