Fuel/oil Ratio question

If I have 1 gallon of gasoline mixed at 20:1 and I want to dilute it to 50:1 how much gas do I need to add? My brain tells me that if I add 1.5 gallons of fuel to this 1 gallon of 20:1 I will now have 2.5 gallons of 50:1. Is this correct? My father is trying to tell me that it is wrong.

I made 5 gallons of gas for my old snowmobile and never used it. I figure instead of letting it go to waste I will just use it in my boat which takes 50:1.

1 gallon mixed at 20:1 should have had 6.4 oz of oil added. For 50:1 you need 50 x 6.4 oz = 320 oz of gasoline. 320 oz / 128 oz per gallon = 2.5 gallons. Therefore, add 1.5 gallons of gasoline to your mix.
 
Even better. Stop fooling around and just pour it into your car or gas truck. Start witb fresh hytest gas and mix it 40 to one. That 50 to one is for EPA specs and doesn't do your engine any favors. All of my 2cy stuff I run a bit heaver. A bottle of oil in 3/4 gallon of hytest gas. Makes about a 36 to one mix. All my new, old, and antique chainsaws are happy with this mix. No carbon or smoke problems. Works for me. My opinion but it works.
