Reading so many of these stories. Remember when engines were built to RUN, not just built to barely run. Remember that?

Yep I also remember carb that you could take apart clean out and go again and they had adjustable main jets to boot. But I do think the newer no points mags are far better then the old point under the flywheel.

I still remember one of the professors my dad worked with who put in new rings in a tiller engine but then could not get it to run. He hired me to fix his mistake and that was back when I was around 15 years old. He did not know he had to time the cam with the crank or it would not run. I opened it up timed the cam correctly and it fired up on the 2nd pull

So that is what those little punch marks are for. Friend of mine got an old "L" model Gravely. High school kids "Repaired" the engine. Do you have ANY idea how to time a Gravely engine??? They sure didn't. He said he would give it to me. I said no thanks.

Depends on the Gravely it is there are a couple of them. Back when I did that timing thing for that guy he sat and watched me do it so he might learn how to do it in the future. He was my dads boss sort of at Delta State University in Cleveland MS. Guy had a doctor degree to boot but that does not mean he could rebuild and engine. LOL

I remember when you could open the hood and see the engine. When you could jump under the hood on a six and do a tune up.

Do you remember when you could open the hood and find the spark plugs easily and did not have to remove anything in order to change those spark plugs? Getting old is such a sad state of affairs.

My boss at the time, and his neighbor put in a new cam kit on a 1989 350 Chevy pu after hours at the shop. Both of these guys knew what they were doing but the next morning it was still in the bay. Apparently the little c that Crane used as a logo, looked like a . to them about 10:00pm that night. I really wanted to laugh, but I liked my job!

Yes and when I needed to replace spark plugs on my '55 Buick, I had to climb in and straddle the frame between the fender & engine. Was too short to lean over the big fender and touch the plugs. I could also lay stretched out fully in the back seat.
(for a nap)..

Yea.. To bad Tecumseh went out of business..

I still grab every LEV 120 engine I can get my hands on..

For like I tell people. I would spend a thousand dollars keeping a staggered wheel Lawnboy running before I would spend a dime on any plastic mower they have to offer today.
