Needed a new drive belt on my CC782 mower today so went several places who told me I had to go to a Cub Cadet dealer for than belt. I did and what I didn't know was that they have platinum in those belts. $55 out the door. Golly gee, I can remember when belt were 8-12 bucks.

You make NO mention of what type of belt you are looking for. Perhaps we could help if we knew.

Henry, the belt does not have platinum in it but it does contain Kevlar.....which is also used in the making of bullet resistant jackets, among other things. Kevlar solves a problem with drive belts that must twist as they change direction in order to reach the driven pulley. Constant twisting and untwisting quickly destroys conventional drive belts by causing them to fatigue the reinforcing cords that keep the belt from stretching and make the belt hold its shape. Therefore, Kevlar belts are of a premium quality and sell at a premium price. The good news is that they have a long life IF all other parts of the drive system are in excellent condition. In the long run, that belt you bought is a bargain because it should outlast 20 standard belts.

I bought a spare drive belt for our Scott Dryer, it was like $1,200, the general manager was so worried about that drive belt he had me buy one AND our local PT Distributor stock one, 4 years later the PT Distributor is out of business (did offer to sell us the belt for $800 before they closed the doors for good) and our spare was still hanging on the wall.

Deck belt on my lawn mower is $75.00 at JD,the same belt at AC was over a $100.00 the last time I bought one.

I agree that Kevlar belts are best ....
however, high quality kevlar belts can be bought for much less directly from a V-belt mfgr.
Look up VBELTSupply.com...I have used them several times with excellent results.

Kevlar might be in some belts and might make some of them better belts.

I am betting that there was no kevlar in v-belts until some time after the IH built Cub Cadets were made.

The belts used on most IH built Cub Cadets other than the generator belt have always been high priced.

And usually only a O.E.M. belt would last.
Any other brand was and usually is a waste of time to install.

$8-$12 bucks for some other belt but not a pto to deck drive belt on a 782 even when the tractor was new.

$55 seems reasonable. Shudder to think what the bets on my JDs are going to cost!
