Crazy stupid gas tank price

So I picked up this Yard Machine tiller wit ha 5HP B/S engine and it has a gas tank where some one tried to seal the seam with silicone gasket maker which I know does not work. So I priced a new gas tank today and I sure was glad I was sitting down because they said $89 plus tax. Guess I'll be rigging up some thing to take its place since that price is way to much for a simple gas tank

Go on Ebay and type in briggs and stratton 5hp gas tank. A whole bunch pop up including the old style square metal ones. All kinds to look at.

(quoted from post at 20:13:59 05/10/18) I would be tempted to try a glue gun,it is nothing but melted plastic.

I had a Deutz riding mower with gas tank under the seat. It had a cap that had to be manually vented. Closed off the vent one winter and forgot to open it the following spring. Tank expanded to where a pulley rubbed through. I tried everything imaginable, but could not find a way to make a permanent repair. Closest I got was using a bolt and nut, with large washers and gaskets, but the hole was on a bit of a radius and didn't hold.

The tank was black plastic (ABS?) and couldn't find any form of glue that would work. Even took JB Weld Plastic Fix and coated most of the tank. Problem was, the two dissimilar plastics would expand/contract at different rates, which would open up the hole again. Thankfully, situations out of our control intervened and we eventually ended up getting a new mower.

If memory serves, a replacement tank was going to cost about $120.

Get yourself a JB weld, steel stick. It is a putty stuff and will stand up to gasoline. I used it on my sears 5000 tank which is plastic and it is doing fine.

Ahh haaa. No don't do that. Old plastic can become brittle. You will never make it right. Hit Ebay and type in what I told you. A ton of gas tanks came up. Take your choice.

A product called Seal All in a yellow tube will stick to anything and I have used it to repair gas tanks several time ..It is impervious to oil and gasoline
