With the weather warming, time to see if my mowers work.
The JD fired right up. Took it for a spin, seemed to be no problem.

I pull up the button to activate the mower, it dies, hard.
Push button down, fires right back up.

Im thinking this has to do w/the electric clutch?
Never worked on such an item.
Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.

Thanks for your time.

Could be an electrical problem with the seat switch(operator presence) circuit, or simply a jammed/stuck mower.

"Dies, hard" might indicate a stuck spindle or idler pulley, or a misrouted belt.
"Dies, like the ignition switch was shut off" would indicate bad safety switch or loose wire.

All good advice. With your machine turned off. Go under the machine
and CAREFULLY unplug the little wire to the clutch. Make sure nothing
is going to grab that unhooked wire. Get back on your machine and
start it. Try the clutch switch, if nothing changes that is good. Your
tractor is fine but the trouble is further down the line. Turn the
machine off. Now plug the clutch wire back in. Get back on the
machine, just turn on the key switch and you should hear a loud CLICK
from your clutch when you pull the knob. If not, you have a bad inter
lock switch in the seat or a bad clutch. Turn the ignition off again.
Take the time to unhook the belt to the mower and make sure all of the
blades turn nice and free rust will glue a belt to a pulley like you
can't believe. You can also have a frozen mandrel. Leave the belt off,
and with the clutch plugged back in. Now just turn the key on but
don't start the tractor. If you pull the switch you should hear the
clutch go CLICK. Next start the tractor and try the clutch again. If
everything stays running you have a problem in a frozen mandrel or the
belt was rusted to a pulley. Just a prossess of checking one at a
time. This may sound a little squirrely but it is just step by step.
Also make sure you pulleys are shinny clean. If rusty they will chew
up your drive belt.

Thank you all.

All makes sense.
Just a bit leary of all the electric gizmos on the machine.
Way different than my old Craftsman, which still works decent enough.
Gives me something to do after work.

Appreciate the tips.

Have fun,

""Dies, hard" might indicate a stuck spindle or idler pulley, or a misrouted belt.".....

Ended up removing the deck. Found a belt had jumped, wedged under a pulley. Verified clutch switch works as expected. Happy with the relatively easy fix, went to reinstall the deck, but found I had jammed the deck foot pedal into a locked position even tho the lock lever was not activated. The online manual is no help.
