Case 444 rearend

well guys, i am trying to figure out if if a Case 444 rear differential would work in a dozer track application. Using individual hydraulic disc brakes from a auto/small truck.

My limited understanding is that when you apply the brake to a "standard type differential" all the drive goes to the unbraked side and it doubles the speed which tends to stall the motor. I am no mechanical engineer but a very clever man once told me that dozer or tracked diffs are set up differently to wheeled applications. Why not google it and see if this is the case.

There is no question that rear axle units from Case garden tractors are very robust. That said, it would not be my choice for your application. If I were you, I would much rather go "full hydraulic". You could use two drive motors from Case tractors. They could be bolted into a custom housing on each side of the tractor. The engine could drive two pumps. One pump for the left track, one for the right track. If you use the hydraulic control valve from two Case tractors, you would have spools to send fluid to each side of the tractor plus two additional spools that are ideally suited for operating hydraulic cylinders. Those valves could be mounted in front of the dash in the centre of the tractor. Custom linkage would operate the spools. This would allow you to travel forward or reverse as well as steer the tractor to the point of having counter-rotating tracks.


The front of the engine could drive one pump and the rear could spin the 2nd pump. You just need to buy a CW and CCW pump that puts out at least 10 GPM and develop around 2800 PSI. I would want at least 16 HP under the hood. An 18 HP Onan would work well. Smooth, quiet and plenty of torque. Hoses with a 4000 PSI BURST rating are readily available in whatever lengths needed. IMO....this is much simpler than trying to adapt hydraulic disc brakes to the Case rear end and you would not be limited by the width of the rear end when building the tractor.

Thanks for the reply Tom, that setup you mentioned (pretty good idea) is a little more than what i want to do , being that the project is more for only show and tell but also want it just to move on and off trailer and park at tractor shows etc. being i have all of the under carriage and track fabricated and installed i don't want to change anything. with that being said, is it possible for the rear end to function correctly with two independent braking systems such as hydraulic brakes one for each side?

Yes all larger and farm tractors have independent L & R side brakes and you can really turn a tractor using the brakes to assist steering
I really don't think use a brake doubles the speed of the other wheel / axle I have been in mud or on ice many time where one wheel spins taping on the apinning wheel stops the spin and the other wheel with better tractor turns and not at twice the speed
SO yes I think it will work just fine for what you want to do

I forgot this in my post the Cletrac crawlers and the Oliver built crawlers used what the called differential steering they used the brakes they had no steering clutches

MNGB - Jack up both rear wheels off the ground of ANY tractor you have, make a mark on both rear tires
you can see from the seat and time how long it takes for a wheel to rotate once with both wheels turning,
Then hit a brake, stop a wheel, either wheel, makes no difference, compare time of one wheel to time for
both wheels rotating.

I can assure you the one wheel time will be EXACTLY half of the 2 wheel time if you do things properly.
Meaning no dragging brakes, bad bearings, tires rubbing on the ground, etc. Hold the engine speed EXACTLY
the same, watch the tach!
