LT 150 automatic John Deere mower

Last week I was given a fairly nice,(except for the stupid broken plastic hood) LT 150 hydrostatic transmission John Deere mower. The lady said it was working good but smoking and using a lot of oil. She had a supposedly small engine guy look at it and he told her the CV-15-S Kohler would cost more to repair than it would be to buy a new mower. She decided to hire her grass cut for this year and gave me the mower to go get it and move it from the guy's place. How good would this mower be with the engine repaired right and what brand/ model hydrostatic transmission does it have? Thanks in advance for the information given. Gene Davis Tennille, Ga.

Look on "TractorData.com". A very good resource for information. Yours would be a LT150H for hydrostat. Bob is correct....its just a lawn mower, not much more.

Thanks for the info. All I would use it for would be mowing ~1/2 acre of flat lawn. So, how good is/was the K-46 hydrostatic transmission. This is a one owner well cared for machine.

I've had good luck repairing those cracked plastic hoods. I use a light gage metal with performed holes in it. Cut pieces to fit and then heat them and melt them do into the plastic. Makes it solid again.
Lots of those with bad trannies and good engines so you might be able to find a good used engine ? or try different and cheap oil and keep adding it.
