John Deere 400 Garden Tractor

Hello Everyone, I am helping a Friend who is lives out of state. They have a John Deere Garden Tractor (with the twin opposed 19.9 hp kohler engine) that will not start. It was turning over fine, then all of a sudden it just stop and there was nothing. I do have the complete booklet style manual, but the pages are not removable and when folding the pages over to scan it distorts the pictures and text so that it is not legible. Does anyone have any electronic trouble shooting guides or a electronic manual that you could share. Thanks, Jack

Do he have a meter or test light? Without either you and him will continue to be lost no matter what info you have. Could be simple, could be complicated.
You dont need a service manual to first check the simple. First remove the battery cables and clean the connections. Then try it again. If no go the starter has two wires, large one coming from the battery and a small one coming from the start circuit. Check for battery voltage at the big wire if no voltage is present fix it, it again isn't complicated. Either the battery has no voltage or it is lost at one of the two connections. If you have voltage at the big terminal make a jumper from a shot piece of #12 wire and touch it between the big post and the small one on the starter. If nothing happens he has a starter issue. If it turns over with the jumper then things get a bit more complicated due to the safeties and switches involved and you will need manuals.

I do not mean this as a slam at all. I take pictures of everything and the quality is great. The Boss paid for the iPhone, and I use it.
