124 Cub Cadet

Hello,
not new to YTMag but new to Cub Cadets.

FIL has an old 124 in a shed/barn thats been sitting for at least 20 years. its surprisingly in pretty good shape and aside from the lower grill looks complete. 3 of the 4 tires still hold air even. the deck looks good (did not have room to see under) too. has a 482U113 deck.

what are these things worth? I always thought the old classic cubs were somewhat sought after but never really looked or paid much attention to them. don't see anything here or on our local craigslist or ebbay

did not try to turn it over. its not where i can get to it very easily until some other stuff is moved out for the summer.

Thanks.

A 124 is a 12 hp Kohler powered 3 speed manual transmission. Mower sounds like the normal 42 inch 3 blade deck. If it hasn't run in 20 years the carb needs rebuilt, new battery, all 3 new belts, the starter belt and two on the mower.

Any chance 20 years worth of dust and bird poop washes off and there's any paint left! What's the inside of the gastank look like?

The engine should bring around $100 if the PTO clutch, carb, muffler, all the tins, spark plug threads are good. The tractor around the engine could add as much as another $200 to that if everything is there and in real good shape. If it's beat up, rusty, then around $150-$200 total tops. Things like wheel weights, 3 point hitchs, blades, tillers, etc. bring BIG money, CC wheel weights were $100/pair last I knew, same as Cub Farmall frt wheel weights.

Pretty much agree with what Dr Evil said, prices are lots less than a few years ago The only ones I would pay any kind of money for would be very nice originals with some options on them. Last year I had a very nice 124 for sale that is in OEM paint, runs like a top and has the creeper gear, lights, rear lift, hub caps, hydraulic lift, chains and dual wheels with the adapters,,, and couldn't get anyone to give me $500 for it with a 48" deck, had one offer for $200. I could part it out but too nice to knock in the head so not for sale now and I use it to pull a cart around and till the garden.

Personally I wouldn't give a $100 for a non running no options 124 that has been sitting forever. Carb kits, tires, tubes, filters, oil, regulators, belts all add up quickly and you soon surpass the price of a good one when fixing up a cheapo.

P.S. the 124 being gear drive is highly sought after by the garden tractor pulling crowd. No matter the condition.

I had someone give me an 86 (a someone low production model) with a burnt exhaust valve. My plan is to get it going as cheap as possible just as a backup mower, so I hope the cost isn't too high. Probably just a fun project anyway and a learning experience for me.
