74 JD 110 start issue

Good Evening, have a 1974 JD 110 that decided it doesn't want to play nice at the end of the winter. The old girl has served me well pushing snow for a few years The current issue has happened a few times in the past, but now it's frequent. When I go to start it, nothing happens. Will not turn over but if I keep turning the key on and off sometimes it will decide to turn over and try to start. Is it possible that the ignition switch is bad? It did it once last year when it was snowing really hard, would not turn over and it was stuck in my yard. Went out a few days later and fired up. Thoughts? Appreciate any feedback on what I should try. Battery is new by the way. Craig

Although it could be an ignition switch issue, I would first check the small post on the starter solenoid with a test light or meter. When you turn the switch to start, check for current there. If there is current and it is still not turning over, then the solenoid is bad.

If there is no current the problem could be theignition switch, any of the safety switches, or bad connections in the wiring between them.

A failed ignition switch is fairly common on those tractors but your
advice about checking the connections back from the starter is correct.

Lot's of possibilities, don't buy any parts until you troubleshoot. Take a jumper cable and eliminate the ignition switch first, then the
solenoid, if not either of them you probably have a bad starter, but check the ground connections first!

Thank you very much Russ/trk/Steve for your input. I will play around with your suggestions this week. I truly appreciate the guidance on this issue!

Look at the yellow wire on the back of the switch(I think it is yellow). It will be the single wire the rest are on another plug. The wire will burn the back of the switch and loosen the rivet that holds the spade on. That is the weak spot to check first.

Good news after taking out the battery try, gas tank, and ignition switch and cleaning up the wires and reconnecting everything she fires up as she should. Now it just won't run for long without putting the starting fluid to the carb. Just need to make some adjustments and I think I'll be back in business. Thanks everyone for the guidance
