Graverly L8

Thanks for the reply's, I'm going to the graverly club web-site and see what i can find out about this machine, I'll probable sell when i get it right. What is a good price to ask?

I'm guessing that you have an L-8 or C-8. Gravely upgraded from 6.6 hp to 7.6 hp in about 1966. The 7.6 hp was the first engine with the upright spark plug, so yours is earlier. I think that the L-8 came out in 1963. I recall that Gravely switched from a cast iron carb to an aluminum carb in about 1961. The basic engine and transmission was pretty much the same from the late 1930 until they switched to a Kohler engine. Most of the part were interchangeable, so it is possible that your tractor may have parts from a number of different years.

I can't tell if your tractor has a governor, (run off the fanbelt), but having one increases the value. It would also be nice to have the hood and the engine shrouds. Your dual wheels are a nice option.

Value seems to depend a lot on location. They seem to be more common from the east coast to Ohio. To get an idea of prices, look on Craigslist.

Agree with you Tom. Those little shrouds that make more air around the cylinder were an option for hot areas or machines that were being used heavy duty. Well worth picking up a set of them. Not hard to put on the machine. Also I would change the oil to maybe 5-20 synthetic blend. Makes the machine much easier to start when cold and the blend has far less tendency to burn or carbonize the valve stems like straight dino oil does. Have fun with it.

Hey Papa....here is something else to look at. This just got posted
not too long ago. Every year the Gravely Club has a MOW-IN. This is a
gathering at some tractor show where you can litteraly drown in
Gravely machines. I have been to four of them. This years is in
Westminster,MD just to the west of Baltimore,MD. About a four hour
drive for me. Time to grab the trailer and some cash and head on over.
The Mow in is September 7,8,9 2018. Don't miss the machine parade.
Everyone is welcome so bring your machine if you want. They have an
incredible flea market. They have some of 5he original one wheel
machines. Think it is a model D. One guy brought his Terra might back
hoe that uses a gravely L-8 for its power unit. Worth over $6,000.oo
fully restored. Very very cute toy! Hope you can go. Very much worth
it!!!

I have never seen a stock Gravely without the shrouds. I've seen a lot of examples where someone foolishly removed the shrouds, but I don't see any stock examples without them in any of my Gravely literature going back into the 40's. I know that without the shrouds your Gravely is going to run stupidly hot. possibly crack the head or jug and just generally run like crap.

My 1962 L was on our farm since new. No shrouds. I put a set on in
2010 from a junked machine. Also didn't have a pressure gauge. Again,
put one on from a junker. There were special order machine bargan
price stuff.

The oil press gauge didn't appear until later years, when I'm not sure, but I have literature that states the operator should take off the fill cap every few hours of operation to make sure oil is being pumped. They don't mention you'll get a face full of oil if you don't throttle down first.

I wouldn't run L without the shrouds for very long and certainly wouldn't work it. Used to have a cracked jug that came from doing that.

The extra "R" they're talking about is in Grave[b:4ff9da9e3c]R[/b:4ff9da9e3c]ly. It's Gravely with just one "R".
