JD 400 garden tractor

A buddy just picked up a 400 with a 62" mower deck. I know nothing about this machine so need some educating. Seller said the deck gearbox "had problems". It is a Pierson [sp?]. Since the tractor is hydrostatic and the mower pto is 840 rpm, how is the pto speed relate to engine speed? Meaning, if he installed a 540 rpm gearbox, can he lower the engine speed to compensate or is the pto speed controlled by some sort of pressure regulator?
TIA

The drive to the mower deck is all mechanical. The hydro transmission does not drive the mower deck, only the ground drive.

The deck "gearbox" is one to one drive with part number M48902 gears. this is for a 60" mower deck in PC1476.

540 gearbox from what?

Garden tractors pto output speed is 2000 rpm with the engine running 3450rpm. Its Belt driven from an electric clutch in the front, on the engine crankshaft. The speed reduction takes place there with the belt pulleys. Gearbox is on the deck. Drive shaft connects the shaft on the tractor to the gearbox on the deck, and I believe the gearbox is 1 to 1.

The deck gearboxes are pretty simple right angle drives. A couple gears, bearings and seals. Unless the housing is damaged, parts can be obtained from Deere to repair it.

Lowering the engine rpm will also reduce the horsepower, as well as hydraulic volume and pressure for the transmission. Meaning, it drives slower and with less power. The flywheel is also the cooling fan for the engine, and the shaft to the transmission has a cooling fan for the transmission. Lower engine rpm = less cooling for both.

The transmission has nothing to do with the pto. If you happen to have the optional rear pto unit, it?s still driven by the front pto shaft to the back with a long shaft.

First of all, is this an OEM undermounted mower or a rear trailing or 3 point hitch mower, possibly aftermarket?

400 does not have an electric PTO. The electric PTO did not arrive until the 420/430 tractors. Perhaps the gear box is the same as on the newer mowers used on the 420/430 tractors. Did you check with Deere to find out if parts are still available?
