I have not been on this forum...I assume garden tractor mowers are appropriate? I there a Briggs and Stratton mechanic on this
site....Im not familiar with the newer engines.

Briggs and Stratton 21.0 ...540cc.... hard to start when cranking. New battery...adjusted valves(not sure what it is) I think .004...still doing it. I think something in the mower is bad on the compression release.

Single cylinder engine?
I'm guessing it turns part way around and stalls on compression stroke.

If you are certain your valves are adjusted to .004, and you adjusted them with the piston about 1/4" down the cylinder after TDC on the power stroke, and you still have this problem, then the only way to verify a bad compression release is to remove the sump and look. It does happen.

Check your starter.
You said the mower is six years old. That's a lot of cranking for a starter.
If the bushings are bad, especially at the commutator end, the starter will drag.
