new engines

anyboody need new drop in engine. have 2 new briggs 22hp units. i have decide to shut the service work part of shop down, new inventory and new used parts all up for grabs.

Put them up for sale on ebay.

In the last couple of years I bought 2 new BS V twins, 18 and 20 hp, from non professionals sellers (packaging for shipment was the clue) for a very reasonable price. It was obvious that engines had been run-in at the factory and then the oil drained for shipment, but to mount the engine to a machine, the mounting bolts are self tapping and self tap into the engine's, non threaded, cast alum (part of the main engine casting) mounts......mounts were still non-threaded meaning that the engines had not been mounted to a machine.

ebay instructs you on how to become a seller. Just go to the site and look around. If no clues, select something for sale and when the screen pops up, look around on it for a querry: "Want to be a seller".

Engines apparently were leftovers from a production run for a major mfgr. as the sellers (different seller for each engine purchased) had several for sale. Decals were removed where they had once been installed......case in point would be some JD lawntractors come with an engine having JD in the decal listing the hp and engine type; assume the OEM removed them prior to offering them for sale to the general public in lot form.

There were used engines (single engine per posting) offered for sale by their owners also.

just thought i would offer these see what happens, they list for 1150.00. now $750.00and these are brand new engines, i get them every winter usually cause of factory closeout, discontnue etc. i am discontinue service in my shop this spring. simply selling out all inventory of new and used item, mowers, lifts etc. i do not do the ebay thing.

Texasmark1, there must have been a bunch of those engines went out on Ebay.

I bought one, just as you describe. It was wrapped in used carpet padding, in a makeshift box that broke open in shipping. The motor rolled around in the truck until the oil filter got punctured, made a big mess!

The engine was not harmed though, other than some cosmetic paint scratches. It showed signs of being run, soot in the exhaust ports, but never mounted.

I suspect it got culled in a QC inspection. When I got it running, the throttle linkage would not work. The bracket was assembled wrong, had to drill out a rivet and turn a bracket over. Other than that, it has had no other problems.

Mine were bought a couple of months apart from different suppliers. First one was the 20 hp. just under $700 with free shipping and the second just under $600 and was the 18 hp. The first one, replaced a Kohler Courage single 20 that just vibrated itself to death including a 2.5" crack in the block where the side flange mounts.

Bolt patterns on mowers of the type are setup on a 10" diameter circle with the mounting plate punched for both single and V twin engines. Fit mounting perfectly, just needed a muffler of choice and control cables longer. Hoods are wide enough to accept both. Difference I had was that my linkage for the single was on the left side of the engine. V twin is in the front requiring longer cables. The L120 had an optional V twin and that cable would probably fit but I found a nice pair of levered controls, also on ebay for 25 bucks and that is what I used on both engine swaps.

The second was an 18hp drop in on a BS L110 lawn tractor to replace a single Kohler 17.5 hp. Got the muffler and shields off ebay for $50 used. Mufflers and pipes are very heavy duty and a used one in apparent decent shape will/should serve you well.

While I'm at it, I'm in my 3rd year on both engines and had nothing but marvelous performance out of both. I use the L110 as my "JD Gator", getting used daily. The 20 hp went into a 46" Husqvarna that I have setup to mow pond banks with studded snow tires front and rear for super traction and better steering on slopes.

I used the same OEM pulley from my single Kohlers on the V twin BS installations. Diameter, length, woodruff key slot, threaded shaft were both the same. Location was also the same and I didn't even need new belts due to a possible length difference. Seems somebody in the industry used their head and set up things to fit different power sources for a given machine on a product assembly line.
