K181 Kohler

Yes, they are pipe thread, 1" sounds right, but you'll know for sure when you get up close and personal with a 1" tap.
 
Wait till he finds out what that 1in. tap costs. Just don't forget, you do NOT want to screw the nipple in all of the way tight!!!!!! Stop at your local electrical supply place and pick up three or four lock rings that are used for the fittings in electrical cabinets. Get the pipe and muffler lined up correctly and then a couple of taps with a screw driver and a little hammer to lock the ring. I also wrap some molly grease around the pipe before I screw it in. Next time it comes out without too much fuss.
 
I just ran into this on a 7hp. Cub Cadet:

Yes, they are 1" NPT.

I found out that if you are wanting to clean the threads, my pipe tap bottoms in the port before it begins to cut threads.

This is not a problem if your threads are good and just want to screw an exhaust pipe into the hole.
 
Don't want it tight?

In my case, the new pipe loosened up when it was hot anyway. It was a good thing I put those rigid conduit locknuts on there, I had to tighten them up again while it was hot.
