Finally getting around to rewire my 444 after an engine overhaul. I'm trying to figure out the saftey switches. It wasn't hooked up when I took it apart. It has a wire from The PTO lever switch which appears to go to the forward and Reverse lever. and from that the wire just hangs there. Where does it go from there? Does anyone know where there is a good readable wiring diagram on the net?

The first 444 was available in 1969 and the last one made was 1988. Over the 19 years of production, there were several changes to the wiring system. When asking questions about ANY Case or Ingersoll tractor, it is very helpful to provide the serial (PIN) of the tractor.

Still.....I may be able to help you. The purpose of the safety switches is to prevent power from the key switch seeing ground so that the starter solenoid is engaged.......which will make the starter/generator from spinning the engine. Here is how that is done. When the KEY is rotated to START, power leaves the START terminal of the key switch and goes directly to ONE of the TWO small terminals on the starter solenoid. The OTHER small terminal on the starter/solenoid must find ground or the solenoid will not close. So a wire from the other small terminal goes to the safety switch that is operated by the PTO clutch lever. There is a second terminal on the PTO switch that goes to the Neutral Safety Switch below the FWD/Rev lever. You will note that there is a round rod that slides back and forth over the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS) as the Travel Lever is pushed and pulled to make the tractor go forward and backward. In the middle of the NSS is a brass rivet that secures the wire that comes from the PTO switch. When the Travel Lever is in the neutral position, the round rod sits on the brass rivet. Power flows from the starter solenoid to the PTO switch and if the PTO lever is in the OFF position, then power travels through the PTO switch to the rivet on the NSS and then through the round rod into the Travel Lever and ultimately to ground. Only then will the starter solenoid engage and cause the start/gen to spin.

The foregoing is based upon the following.

1. The solenoid in your tractor is the CORRECT one. and functions properly.

2. The PTO switch functions properly.

3. The NSS also functions properly

4. The Travel Lever and rod are not badly worn and are making proper ground.

Any Multimeter can be used to check out each of the listed components to make sure that the power from the key switch (when in the START position) is fining its way from component to component.
