Gravely, old chain 12 volt starter

Just got an old gravely walk-behind with the old round mower and sickle blade, been sitting a while, pulled the starter and clean it up but it still would not run by jumping with battery. brushes look good and are about half worn down. Don't know but I think it's a "L' . anyone know where to get parts for them or maybe some one close to Okeechobee, Florida, near West Palm Beach, Fl. has an old old for parts. Thanks

Does the starter work with the chain off? That is, with no load? If not, then check the ground, wires and the starter switch. Also make sure the engine rolls over freely by hand with the plug out.

Look up Richards Lawn and Garden, about the biggest supplier in the country for old Gravely stuff.

There are lots of (free) old manuals online. Just do a search for Gravely Manuals.

Ariens owns the Gravely brand now. You can do a search for parts on their website. Just be warned that part numbers have changed a number of times since the model "L" was last made nearly 50 years ago.

Your starter is probably a Delco Remy USA 1108311-3A-17

Do yourself a BIG favor. Go to this web site. ( Gravely Tractor Club
of America). You will need to dig around a little but look for Chips
manuals. Every cotton picking service,and owners manual ever printed
is on there for free in PDF files. Go crazy and find what you need!!!

Not really a lot of information to go on.

Is the starter itself locked up and will not turn or will it not turn the engine over?

Have no experience with them. But was told once that a Farmall A model starter can be used by removing the drive gear nose cone and installing the Gravely drive sprocket..

I know that a place in Quincy, Fl that sales the Gravely L starter. But the going price is over $200 for one. They also have rebuild kits that has new brushes, holders, bushings and face plate with a new bushing for around $60. I will see if I can find them and let you know.

Just an after thought. That is a very special one way drive flywheel with a clutch in it. If you have a needle grease fitting carefully give it a little shot of grease. If they bind up you are in deep do do. Man osha would have a cow now if some company came out that system today. As i said go on that site. They have every manual and also sales literature about Gravely machines.

The clutch is not hard to take apart a put back together. The hardest part is getting all of the cams in correctly so that the clutch does not bind.

You want to put as little lube on the cams as possible. Wheel bearing grease or gear oil is a big no no with them.

He could remove the chain and check the clutch. It should turn easily in one direction and lock up in the other. If it is locked up in both directions it will need to be taken apart, cleaned and inspected. A good cleaning will fix most of them.

Suzuki still uses a one way bearing system in their DRZ 400 motorcycles.
