How to remove the transaxle in JD 165

I removed the wheels and the nuts and straps that go around the axle shafts. I disconnected the shift linkage on the right and a rod that is on the left. The drive belt is off the pulley. The hydro unit will wiggle forward and back, but it will not come down. What is holding it up? The gas tank is above it, does it need to come off also to reveal a fastener that is hidden?
Thank you

One more to add. Does this machine have a rear pannel for a frame member?? You might need to remove that and spread the frame just a tinny bit. Nothing is ever easy.

I could not see anything that was obviously holding it in place. I am now going to start removing everything from the top of the machine and work my way down. I needed to make my twentieth trip to the garage for another wrench and decided to call it a night.

Those transmissions usually have one or two torque straps at the front to keep the transmission from twisting. Not familiar with that model, but on some tractors the torque strap bolts into the top of the transmission at the front.

I have a PDF of the tech manual you're welcome to,removal of trans-axle is covered in it, if wanted shoot me your email
