Tractor doesn't have any of the shrounds around the flywheel and cylinder heads for cooling. I would not run it as parts
will overheat. Worth parts only as is!

NOPE.......... I cannot tell you what it is. What I can tell you is that "A"....it is not worth $500.00. and "B"....it appears that all the cooling shrouds have been removed from the engine. Therefore it will overheat and eventually
self-destruct. This is one you should run away from. Walking is too slow.

Large frame Bolens. Probably worth $500,
even with the missing parts. Large frames
are sought after. Looks too old to have
power steering, but if it does the steering
is worth the asking price.

So it has missing parts to the motor. Man it sounds good running plow go's up and down. He went down to $400.00

Can't find any pictures are to match this tractor.

I would want the cooling tin back on, but that old Bolens will be a work horse and a deck wont be hard to find.

Also, you might peruse the link below, the model numbers are clickable, check out the 16 or 17 Hp and greater versions, you may find a closer match to what you have than what I posted. (Photos with many of the models.)
Bolens

Once again, I have to say no. The reason is simple. YOU HAVE no idea how long this tractor has been running without any cooing fins. Would you buy a car that runs OK but has no radiator? This is almost the same thing.
Uncontrolled heat fries the motor oil and causes rapid wear to they cylinder walls, the rings and the pistons. To me, this tractor is unusable. The engine should be opened up to see how much damage has taken place.
Combine that with the cost and aggravation involved to obtain the correct parts and this becomes an expensive tractor very quickly. I can envision spending at least $1000.00 to do a proper rebuild to that Kohler plus the
cost of the missing parts. There is nothing all that special about this tractor that would justify the time and money it would take to make it a good working, reliable unit. And at the end of the day, no one will pay you the same
amount you will have sunk into it. This is a money pit. Move on and find a decent low hour tractor that you can use for years ...trouble free.

Well, at least that Bolens won't completely run away on a downhill slope and try to kill him like your beloved hydradrives! ;-)

BOB... The condition you speak of was corrected back in the 80's but I make no apologies to owners who FAIL to read the Operator's Manual and learn how to manage this issue. on tractors that are not equipped with the Holding Valve.

AS often said: you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink.

There's a holding valve? Lol just teasing with proper use a hydra drive is not dangerous at all even on hills.

Hi guy's, I stop back up there to take a look it and test ride it.

It starts up on the 2nd turn of the key motor was cold before starting. No smoking are motor tapping responds quick to going forward and backing up. Full throttle runs about maybe 6 to 7 miles per-hour, Dish top gray color home made, some small rust but not bad. Seem to run good the guy has a big farm tractor heaven here big 1's small 1's hot rod pulling tractors, I drove it around some - steering has a little play, right front wheel turn radius is less than the lift side so it makes wide turns. Plow go's up and down and turns lift to right. There was a heavy log on the ground 30" wide about 12 feet long the tractor pushing it around with the plow with no problem. It needs a good cleaning painting. Only thing i see wrong is play in the steering and the right side front wheel turns less than the lift side.

Thanks for the info.

I don't have ant experience with Bolens in particular but my guess is that it has a Ross steering box just like my Ariens and Cub Cadets. At least in the case of Cub, they bias the steering to turn tighter to the left than to the right, from the factory. the reason is that with the discharge to the right, they figure most would "turn left" when doing laps around the yard to "blow the clippings out" rather than to blow them in towards the uncut grass. Turn left just like circle track racing....

I never realized this, never really thought about that they may be made like that, until I saw it posted on another tractor forum then next time I got one of my machines out, I paid more attention to how tight I could go around things.. and discovered mine are same way. Do you ever mow around a tree with chute pointing towards it? Most mow with chute pointing away....
the only time it would get me would be the 1st lap around a fenced yard, in the corners... that 1st lap made blowing in away from the fence, then turn around and blow clippings out away from center of mowed area the rest of the way.

I have not bought yet but still thinking about. trying to find info on the net about the steering, front wheels lift side turns tight the right side wheel only a little.
