Wiring Help

Was wondering if you could give me some advice on a wiring issue I am having with a K161.? We saved this engine from the scrap heap and got it running again, which is a feat in itself.? The engine is in an 1950s vintage garden tractor with a 6 volt positive ground system.? Everything works as it should, however, I am not certain if the generator is charging the battery, as the am meter is not moving, either positive or negative, as the tractor runs.

I have attached a schematic of how it is currently wired and was hoping you could take a look and see if it looks right?? I watched some videos on wiring a tractor, but the ones I could find showed wiring using a keyed switch and solenoid.? My tractor has neither it has a heavy duty push button starter switch and single pull ignition switch with only two leads on the back.

No your system is not charging !! To be wired correctly, you need to move the lead from the B terminal of the voltage regulator to the same location on the amp meter as the power to the push/pull switch. As drawn once the engine starts their is no way to stop it as you are by passing the switch if it were charging, so it is not charging.. The switch should be the only power feed to the coil.

Thanks for the advice. I moved as you suggested. I see a slight movement of the needle to the charging side, but nothing really significant. Could be that the ammeter is not working? Guess I will find out if I am charging when I see whether or not the battery dies?
 
If you have a voltmeter check the voltage across the battery with the engine stopped. Start the engine and check the voltage again, if charging the voltage will be higher with the engine running. If 6 volt system you should see at least a volt higher, if 12 volt system it should be over 2 volts higher.

he amp meter has a + and a - side to it. My, SWAG, is that you have the wires reversed on the meter and it is actually discharging the battery.
