John Deere 110

I have recently acquired my grandpa's 110 round fender and am wondering where are some good places to look for information about it?I got it running and everything appears to be in working order but I know nothing of garden tractors. The engine codes right up but it seems like it has a little rattle to it. What engine oil should I run in it? And what oil does the transaxle use?

Check ebay for service and owners manuals. I have 2 110's. They both burn oil real bad and I have to wire the dipsticks in or the blow by past the piston rings blows them out. They barely run past idle and blow some cool smoke rings. It's been a few years since I ran them.

It seems to idle and run good, just noisy at low rpm. Don't know if it's a leaking head gasket, or grabbing onto the pulley it seems to have some slop in the rod bearing or wrist pin.

It might be a carbon build up in the cylinder. Did your grandfather run the engine slow most of the time? You might try gently spraying some combustion chamber cleaner in the carburetor while it is running. I don't know what oil it calls for but I would put 10/40 or straight 30w in it. You might add a little STP (the thick stuff in the blue bottle) if it still knocks after the oil change. In the long run it might be best to just rebuild the engine.
I'm not an expert here. Most of the other posters will know more than me.

The last few years grandpa was around for he mostly used it like a golf cart, so yes it was ran at low rpm. Then it has sat for the last eight years at my dad's then my eight year old daughter wanted it because it looks like my 4010. I was thinking of putting 15-40 in the crank case since that is on hand around home.

15-40 oil will be just fine. Below is a link to the engine service manual, and a "copy and paste" to the Owner's Manual.

sounds like you might have internal blown head gasket. will blow oil out dipstick tube when they do that

The K161 and 181 calls for a straight 30 weight oil. 15W40 oil is mostly formulated for use in Diesel engines and not recommended for gas engines due to all of the additives used in it.

If I remember correctly the 110 came with a Peerless 2000 series transmission. If yours has a Three speed it takes 1 quart of SAE EP 90 weight gear oil. The 4 speed takes .75 (3/4) quart. You will be fine using SAE EP 80-90 oil if you can not find straight 90 weight.

Do not use Gl-4 and GL-5 oils. Gl-5 gear oil is not compatible with bronze or brass. The Peerless 2000 series transmissions have brass/bronze bushings in them.

Thank you for the information. I'm used to ag tractors not lawn tractors, so I feel a little in the dark on this one. Both my little girls seem to love this thing and it was grandpa's so I'm not afraid to put some money into it.

While there may be reasons not to use diesel oil in late model autos with catalytic convertors, it's perfectly fine for an older engine non-emissions gasoline engine this.
