Transmission for Murray Rider

Have an old Murray rider mower I need a transaxle for. The model number on the Murray is unreadable but the tranny has 801 16B on the top line then Peerless on the second line and 7280 1820 on the third line of the tag. The engine is a B & S says Twin II 18, its numbers are model 422707, type 1507 01 and code 87101912. I got the tranny with it in several boxes, previous owner said it didn't pull so he took it apart, I do not know if it is all there or not. Think if I can find a complete transaxle, and freight is not too high, it will be the simplest way to fix it. The engine turns.

Your transmission common back in the 80s. Lots of them in use . John Deere used them
in 111 . There are a couple of different axle lengths as well as wheel to axle mounting.
Murray Owners world will have info.

I have 3 of those transmissions in use and don't have problems with them.
Shift keys do get rounded edges after lots of use so I have replaced them on 2 mowers.
I do use the recommended factory lube.
You can find the Peerless manuals for download online for free. Cover will be Blue and say Tecumseh.

Here is PDF manual for many Peerless including 801 series.

They usually have those transaxles for sale used on Ebay.

If that is the Murray with the 'shift-on-the-go' lever in the fender, that you pull inward to shift, sometimes the worn clutch link and worn shift linkage bind where they cross each other just below the fender and then it won't tighten the belt in 3rd and 4th gear. (When you pull inward on the shift lever it also slacks the belt so the tractor won't jerk when you shift to another gear.)

Sorry I can not help you with a transaxle..

But what are the odds that the guy pulled the tire from the axle and the Key fell out??

Not sure what the previous history was.
I bought one of the Tecumsci/Peerless manuals off ebay when I was thinking of trying to reassemble the parts I have.
If I could find a transaxle and the axles were the wrong length I guess I could remove them and install the differential I have.
The shifter appears to have been in the middle not on a fender.
Does the 016B, in the part number, identify special modifications for Murray? Kinda interesting the 7820 (date code?) on the tranny and the engine code 87101912.

Also what is the reccomended factory lube, I was thinking of using Deere Corn Head Grease if I rebuilt it. There is a pretty complete repair and parts shop in Abilene, Texas. They may have the proper lube.

Peerless Bentonite transmission oil is just SEA90 weight with Bentonite (Clay = dirt) added to it to make it an 00 weight oil/grease. $14 +/- for a quart of Peerless trans oil is not worth it in my book..

John Deere Corn head oil/grease is 0 weight. It is thicker than 00 and will work fine in your transmission.

I have mixed cheap general purpose (Not Red N tacky high heat) grease and a quart of 90 weight in a container with a drill driven paint mixer before with good results. Adding grease to the oil yourself allows you to mix it as thick or thin as you wish.

I think the 016B is key for warranty work, manual seems top say that.
Engine is model year 1987. I think transaxle is the same but not certain.
