Gt275 Questions

The JD GT275 I bought last month needs some engine work, pretty sure it needs an engine or this one worked on. It is burning oil, blowing out blue smoke when you start it up, shut it off and sometimes when you move the throttle up or down. What would I need to get to rebuild this engine (Kawasaki 17hp K series)??? I was hoping maybe a set of rings? I don't know a lot about small engines and hoping you guys could help me out. Its too good of a mower to junk, it actually mows better than our LT180 )

Short block for that engine is part number is AM131151. Over $2300.00 from Deere. If you really want to go a engine route look up repower specialist and see what 2K will get you with a Honda replacement and 6 more HP.

My GT275 also smokes a bit at startup and most of the time there is a burning oil smell about it, BUT, the oil level doesn't drop that I can notice, I check it before and after mowing (usual mow time is one to two hours). So, any major burning thru the engine is negligible. I thought I read somewhere that the oil pan gaskets on these engines are known to leak and if so, a slight leakage of oil onto the muffler might be the cause of the smoke and the smell. Might be worth a look. Said to be a some what easy fix if leaking badly.

I figure I can buy a lot of oil for what a rebuild or repower would cost!

BTW, I really like how it mows too, probably does the best job of anything I've owned.

Your right on the mowing job! Well I check it before I start mowing, after an hour or so mowing the oil light will come on when its at idle, I usually put in a little more oil and it goes out. Last week while mowing it blew out a big cloud of blueish smoke, knocked a few times and cleared up then ran good again. Also after cutting it off to go eat supper _15-20 minutes) it is a pain to get it to start back. Sometimes I let it cool off awhile and it starts right back up. I wonder if new piston rings would help at all???

I agree- when I mow with the neighbor's JD 345 it leaves some longer grass on turns where the front wheels run it down. I don't notice that with the 275.

$2300.00 for a short block when the entire engine sales for around $1600.00???

A new 22 HP Honda GXV690 engine sales for around $1500.00..

Thanks for reminding me why I refuse to deal with John Deere..

You just need rings and a gasket set. I would almost bet that the motor has been hot some time in its life. The rings are soft now. I have ran into this one several Kawasaki motors. Just deglaze the cylinder with a hone and install new rings. You will be good to go. I rarely see a bore worn much.
