JD 116 charging problems

I got a JD 116 with a charging problem to repair. My question is , does anyone know the correct stator to use on this unit? It has a dual circuit stator with a red and black wire coming from the stator , red wire has the diode installed in it but the jd service manual calls for the single red wire style and then they run it thru a diode modual to convert ac to dc which is not in the wireing harness of this tractor.Could there have been a serial number break at some time that the system was changed ? One more thing every dual wire stator I've tried so far is grounded to the unit and creates a load draw on battery to deaden it when I hook the wire to the positive post of the battery to charge it . Any help would be greatly appreciated !

You can go to www.jdparts.com and view the parts catalog for FREE.

Only ONE stator is shown for all serial numbers.

Serial numbers up to 315000 use a "AM38571" diode module, Key # 16, 315,001 and up use an "AM38783" "wiring lead with diode".

I suspect you are either missing that, or it's shorted.

Key # 28, about $35 at the dealer.

I would suspect it's similar to Briggs part number 393814, less the ring terminal, an internet search shows them available for $7.50 and up.

Had something simular to that. The plug on the bottom of that regulator corroded and fryed. On a 160 mower.

A diode does not convert anything. A diode only allows electricity to flow in one direction (from Stator to regulator or Regulator to the battery). Think of a diode as a check valve on a water line. If it is hooked up backwards the power from the battery will flow from the battery to the stator or regulator and will not allow the charge to reach the battery when running.

The Briggs & Stratton 402707 series engine used three different type of charging systems.

474 = Dual Circuit

474A = Tri Circuit, 9Amp Regulated

887 = DC only
