small engine tach

Has anyone found a small engine tachometer that worked as it should?
The one I purchased will record hours, RPM read out all over the place.
Have tried all settings & wraps on the coil wire. Can't get it stable on RPM read out.
Using it on a IH 129 Cub Cadet.

Thanks for any ideas,

Ted

I don't know if you want it for permanent mount or not, but I use a PET tachometer to adjust chainsaws and set rpm on other small 4 cycle engines with magnetos. The nice thing is you just hold it close to the sparkplug to read. It senses the spark pulses on the plug wire. (Of course, it is no good at all on diesel engines.)

I remember we had problems with it reading Husqvarna auto-tune rpm though-there must be a difference in the ignition pulse somehow. My tach was ordered as a Husqvarna part about 10 years ago. I think it is a PET 302.

I see a PET 304 which Echo recommends for about 70 bucks when I google PET tachometer. It is practically identical to mine.

Hi ted I haven't tried the tiny tach on a Kohler K series but I know the cheap Chinese types will not work on a Kohler with battery ignition and only half way work on the Kohler breakerless ignitions

Thank you for all the replies.
GB in MN I have tried everything, as you say it will not work. Should have checked here first would have saved a lot of time.
Billy Shafer do you use your Tiny Tach on a Kohler?

Thanks,
Ted

Billy - Your day is coming, Tiny Tach only lasts 2-3 years. Tiny little non-replacable battery inside them, it fails, wipes the memory and program out, then you throw it away and buy another.

I bought my first one 15 years ago, bought last one 4-5 years ago. Total waste of money.
