Gator blades?

Are they any better than reg blades or should I just replace with the high lift blades on my Jd 50 in deck?

As soon as you start asking about blades bells start ringing. Do you
need to "Mulch"? I dont cause I mow often enough. Do you need the
grass to be thrown far away? Do you have a bagger or a trac-vac ?
Biggest question, do you have sandy soil? In SJ there is nothing but
sand and it will rip the S out of your deck. It is like mowing with a
sand blaster. Deck full of holes in only a few years. I use on all of
my machines LOW lift blades and most of the season I use "sand
blades". These blades have No lift. The only time I use only ONE hi
lift blade at the discharge side of the deck is when I have the trac-
vac hooked up. Got more questions just ask.

I don't use a bagger and don't have to worry about sandy soil here in SE Ohio. I guess I will just stick with the regular high lift blades on the JD317. Thanks to both of you for the help.

Low-lifts for sandy soil cutting with side-discharge.
Med-lifts for standard cutting with side-discharge.
High-lifts for bagging & side-discharge.
Wavy for mulching with mulch-kit.
Gators for side-discharge.

I have a Deere HC (9-Iron) 60" deck & side-discharge.
It cuts like the 7-Iron & leaves long clippings.
I use G5 Gators to reduce the clippings' size.
The G5s are the same as the G6s but thinner/lighter/easier to spin if you have a smaller engine.

I use Gator Blades on a JD 38" mulching deck equipped with a mulching kit. The blades are identical to the JD mulching blade except for the raised, tooth like fins on the back edge of the blade. When mowing grass, the Gator Blades seem to produce finer clippings than the JD mulching blades, but not a lot of difference. Where Gator Blades really excel is mulching leaves. The Gator blades shred the leaves into finer particles that the JD mulching blades.

olilt,
Curious, are you using G3 or G5/G6s.

This is a funny topic.
A true mulch blade is designed to push the grass down into the turf.

The G3 is sort of a 3-in-1 blade.
The G5/G6 have no offset.

Oregon's website even says they're all multi-purpose.
Of course they want to sell blades! :)

It all comes down to what works best on your deck & in your grass type!
