Pull start broken

I loaned my rear tine tiller to a friend and it came back broken. The pull rope was all the way out to the end of it's length. I had worked on stuck ropes years ago and hoped that this would be the same. Not. The rope spool is riveted in place and appears to not be repairable. Here are the numbers: 5HP B&S, Model 135202, Type 0237 01, Code 94021720. Is this recoil repairable or am I going to have to order the complete housing? Thanks guys...............Dy

The recoils that have a rivet in the center are not repairable other than replacing the rope. Sounds like the spring is broken which means a new recoil assembly is needed.

Pull the full fan cover off and then you can get to the back and pull things out to repair them BTDT many many times but i also did that for a living for a while. The rivets only hold the one part in place which does not need to come off you just need to pull the whole fan/flywheel cover off to fix things

If the spring is broken, and near the end, you can use an angle grinder with a cut off blade to cut new notches in the spring to reuse it.

If the rewind starter is riveted to the fan shroud it most likely has the new type starter. The spring in them is bent on both ends (no notches). They usually break at or slip out of the plastic part that holds the starter dogs (aka pawl ratchet). You can remove the spring by removing the screw in the center of the ratchet that holds it to the housing.

If need be the rivets can be drilled out and the rewind starter removed from the shroud. Small bolts, washers and nuts can be used to mount the starter to the shroud after repairs are made.

I was a Snapper dealer in the 90's. When B&S changed from the
old ratchet with the balls to the new style. They were not
serviceable. The rope pulley, spring and ratchet dogs were held
with a large rivet in the center not a screw. Parts were not
available for this style.

Later B&S changed the recoil again. This time they used a small
shoulder screw instead of the rivet. You can buy parts for this
style.

Thanks everyone for your great advice. You never fail to help me out when I need it..................Dy
