So here's my debate. I was given this mower. I have
had the engine in this running but it's gonna need a
lot otherwise. I am not dead set on any brand
nessicarily but am wanting a well built garden
tractor that can do light tillage harrow ect. Push a
blade and mow. I'm not worried about initial
investment as long as I'm still gonna be using one
intwenty years. So do iI fix this or pull engine and
keep looking? What do you guys think?

Let me be clear I already have tires and don't care about paint. I just want to know if the drive line is strong enough for work or if it's a lawnmower. It is a horizontal shaft with four bolt wheels. With stuff I have laying around I could have this thing working for about $50 total investment. I alraedy have a lawnmower so if that's all it is I'll just use the engine for somthing else.

This tractor does not fit the definition of "well built" or "garden tractor". It started life as a low quality MTD built lawn tractor that was abused and from the looks of it, never maintained. I would suggest you look elsewhere for your garden tractor.

It's kind of sad that the thing looks like that.A woman bought it brand new she passed away about six months later. Her son used it the rest of that summer. It wouldn't start in the springtime and it set in his yard until about two weeks ago.It does not sound like the machine was built to do what I wanted it to do so it sounds like it'll be make a good donor engine for something else.

There are fairly well built lawn tractor. Probably better than
anything you'd find at HD now! I think CC did have a three point hitch and tiller you could get for them. Also it would run a snow blower. As far as pushing a blade, it's not a 4wd Kubota but if you got it given I'd keep it. We have a 2165 that has about 700 hours on it now and looks worse than yours but keeps on working. Our 2165 has AGS transmission which is a little bit different. It's a manual transmission that everyone assumes is hydrostatic. Not sure if the 2155 has the same set up.

I'm going to agree and disagree. Your right, it's not a garden tractor, and I don't know if MTD built it or not, but it's not low quality and it was well built. If it's the same as my 2165 it will have a cast and greasable front axle with tie rod ends not the usual light duty crap. My 2165 looks worse than his and it has 700 hours on it. In that time it's had belts, batteries, a new seat, a bearing in the pto clutch and a new gear on the starter. I've welded the deck and put tubes in the dry rotting tires. For a number of years it cut our shelter belts and around the grain bins so it's been pretty well abused and it's still running good.

jr1983:

IF....you want a Cub Cadet and a real Garden Tractor for ground engaging implements, then a pre 1990 Cub Cadet would be the ticket. IF....you want an IH built Cub Cadet, then pre 1980.

Any Cub Cadet from 1991 to present is far less superior than it's predecessors.
