Husqvarna YTH22V46 engine dies when engaging blades

A neighbor asked me to troubleshoot her Husqvarna YTH22V46 riding mower. She said it started fine but the engine would die as soon as she engaged the blades. When I first went to check it out it started up fine and the engine kept running when engaging the blades. The next day she called and said it happened again. I went over and started the engine, and sure enough, as soon as I let up on the clutch to engage the blades the engine died immediately. I tried a few more times. Sometimes the blades engaged without the engine dying, and other times the engine died and caught again depending on how far I pushed on the clutch pedal. Maybe an intermittent safety switch? Thoughts?

Thanks,
Howard

It sure sounds like it. Go on Utube and put in seat saftey switch. There is a super hi-way worth of how to do it . Go on ebay and buy the correct switch that looks the same.

Does the engine ever die when fully warmed up? Does it help to use a little choke? Engaging the blades places a sudden load on the engine. If it is running a little lean (as most do now) the engine can stall with application of load. My New Holland with a 20 HP Kawasaki wants to warm up a little - then it will spin the three blades without hesitation.

Yes, it is likely a safety switch but I can't tell from your post.

Sounds like the seat safety switch unless the engine bogs down and if it bogs down then it could be a spindle bearing going.

You guys were right on target. I took another look at the mower and noticed that someone had pulled the discharge chute open with a bungee cord, and fastened one end of the bungee to the wires going to the seat safety switch. Disconnected the bungee, re-seated the switch connector, and all is well!

Thanks again!
