1450 Hydro Dying?

Got the 1450 out to try and plow a little in the garden. Our other cub (72) is gear drive so I am new to the quietline hydro. The hydro will really bog down on slight inclines and when rolling over dirt clods and such. Is this normal or is the hydro going bad? I really have to move the lever far forward or backwards to get her to move and then it really surges. I filled the hydro with hytran when we initially got her running. Perhaps look into a new filter?

Connor9988:

I would suggest that you change the Hydro Filter.

I have a Cub Cadet 1450, as well as, 3 other Cub Cadet tractors with the Sundstrand Hydro-static Transmission. ALL of them with tend to gain speed as they go down a incline and loose going up. I simply adjust the Hydro Lever to compensate. People often confuse a tractor with a Hydro unit, with "cruise control" and it is NOT.

I have a 129 and 149 with hydro. I am no expert on cub cadets, but I wonder if your 1450 needs the trunion repair. Like the others said, you probably need to do an oil and filter change too. It takes 7 quarts.

It might pay to ask this same question over on the IHCubcadet forum.

New hydro filter will not fix the loosing and gaining speed. It WILL make your hydro last a lot longer.
Remove the center frame cover between the seat and steering column. On the left rear side will be the hydro linkage also known as The Trunnion. On the top there is a spring inside a spring with two special end pieces that over the years have probably wore grooves in the rectangular hole the springs fit in. The springs are probably loose in the hole too. New Springs would be tight and fix your speed variation.

It's nice having hydraulic lift on your sleeve hitch but I pull my plow with a gear drive.

Oh, and make sure your engine mounts are in good shape. There's instructions on IHCubCadet.Com about welding a cross piece into the engine mounts and replacing the isomounts as well as fixing the Trunnion. Also make sure your rag joints and spiral roll pins are in good shape, or are NEW. A single wrap roll pin from a hardware store will not hold up.

where a bouts are you located? I have a 1650 roller (no engine) advertised on a couple of the forums for sale, in Illinois about an hour south of Chicago... same hydro and rear end as yours
