John Deere 116 trouble

I have an 1982 JD 116 Lawn Tractor (with a Briggs) that has been a great running mower for the last 8 years but it developed a not so pleasant cough this past weekend. The engine began to serge and sputter then eventually quit. It sounds like it was starved for fuel. I change the the oil regularly along with the air filter and fuel filter. I tore into it Saturday got it running again but when I ingauged pto it quit again. I found a crack in one of the fuel lines and replaced it and it is still not right. I start it and it runs then dies. The other thing I should note is I think the engine is pretty tired because once I turn it off it won't start hot. Any advice would be appreciated. I know it's at the end of its days but I was hoping to get one more season out of it. Thank in advance for any replies.
 
sounds like you still have a fuel issue,,,if you have fuel lines that are cracked enough to suck air then i would replace the fuel line from tank to carb.. you stated that you dove into it does that mean you pulled the carb and cleaned it completely and do a rebuild kit on it,,,if not that would be my next move,,are the plugs 8 years old,,yep they are next..and as to the motor being hard to start when hot does not mean its finished,,it also may be part of the carb issue.. a compression check will be a better indicater of engine life exspectency.. if i remember those 116s have a twin cylinder engine.
 
By tearing into it I ment tearing off the side covers of the engine so I could see how the line was routed. I did not rebuild the carb, but the plugs look good. The tractor runs strong when it has fuel. I think there may be a vacume issue within the fuel system. I pressurized the tank and got plenty of fuel to flow, then it starts great but seems to run dry and quit. I can't figure it out? Where in Pa are you?
