Briggs Air Cleaner Question/Plow-Trac

I picked up this old Plow-trac for $35. It has a Briggs model 170402, which I believe is a 7hp. Does this style air cleaner have oil in it? Or does it just have a paper style element? Or both? Currently it has nothing in it. Should there be a gasket or seal on the bottom side where it mounts to the carb? Currently it has nothing.

Thanks.

Hi yes there should be a gasket under the air cleaner bowl and yes it is an oil bath cleaner there will be marks telling where the oil level should be.

Thanks,Right now the air cleaner is just an empty bowl with a hole in the middle of it. Should there be some sort of wire mesh in the middle of that hole? I did put some oil in it, but it seems like the vibration of the engine causes the oil to splash around, down the hole and into the carb.

About 1/2 inch of #30wt. Oil. Also a paper gasket under the bowl. Nice
old toy!! Please take care of it. 5hey are getting far and few
between. Close to 60 years old or more.

Hi fpappal, can you post some better pictures of the engine and air cleaner assy, and are you sure its a model 170402? I looked at the parts manual for that model and it looks like a different engine and air filter assy.

Here are a few pics I had on my phone. I will not be able to get better pics until tomorrow. The only number I have to go by is the one on the recoil housing, but who knows if that is the original housing? Looking at the original owners manual for the Plow-trac it did come with a 7hp, and the picture on the front does show one with a recoil starter, not the type you wrap the rope around.

According to the manual, the 7hp model was called the Power-trac, the 5 3/4 hp was called the Plow-Trac, and the 3hp was called the Chor-Trac. This particular toy that I picked up says it is a Plow-Trac, but yet it has the 7hp motor on it.

I will take some better pics tomorrow of the air cleaner and engine.

Hold on there. Unscrew that little wing nut and take the top off. Flip it over and take a picture. Post it. There should be a filtering element there in the lid. It might have been butchered. Also a picture inside of the bowl so we can see both.

Hi fpappal, yes I see its a 170402 model B&S, the parts manual I have for 1704xx series engine don't show an oil bath air filter but rather a paper filter, it may have been changed at sometime or it could be the the mfg ordered an oil bath cleaner beings it was on a tractor in the dirt. If you don't have a parts manual and would like one I could e mail you a copy.

Thank you, yes I would appreciate you sending me that parts manual. Do you have any idea what year the 1704xx engines were produced? I am trying to determine if I have the original engine or if it was replaced at some time.

Hi email sent hope you get it I mistakenly said the last number was date that wrong its code. I can't read it in the picture.
