Cub Cadet 127 TransAxle Swap.

I have a Cub Cadet 127 hydrostatic that will run for awhile, then acts like its in forward and reverse at the same time. The tractor comes to a stop and the engine bogs to a stop. Some times shutting it off and re-starting seems to "free up" the transmission, for lack of a better description. My thoughts were to take out the hydro unit and replace it with a gear driven unit from an old 108. Any thoughts? Has anyone done this swap?

If you do this, be sure to get all the parts. You need almost every part from the flywheel on the engine through the clutch back to the transmission and you need the clutch fork and almost all of the linkage from the clutch pedal to the clutch. A parts donor tractor with all those parts is ideal.

It would probably be much easier to find a good used hydro transmission and just swap them.

It might be easier to swap your good running engine onto the frame of a gear drive tractor too.

It can be done. The only issue is that you will need the Drive Line from a NF Cub Cadet (ie: model 126). Then you will be good to go.

When was the last time you changed the Hy-Tran and filter on the hydrostatic? Sounds like the oil is worn out and thins out when it gets hotter and hotter. It's just not possible for the hydro to be in forward and reverse at the same time. Be nice if you had an infared temp gun and could get a couple temp readings when this happens. I've seen IH hydros so hot they boiled the oil out of the breather vents and they still kept pulling. Did slip a bit more till they cooled off.
Harbor Freight has the temp guns for sale at $12 to $28 and cheaper with coupons. Their a great tool to have for lots of other uses too.
