gas in crank case

Hi, I have a Honda 5hp tiller. Always starts and runs good. Its about 35 yrs old. Still looks new. Went to start it yesterday and it wouldn't. Spark is good. Took carb bowl off and checked float. It seemed good. Put bowl back on and it started but sucked gas into crank case. I shut it off. Drained oil and replaced. Cleaned oil bath filter. It started. Ran nice. A few hrs later, won't start. Is that a stuck float or valve or what? Any suggestions? Ed Will

As with any small engine, the breather is very important. If the breather becomes plugged, it can do all sorts of unusual things. There is a "pcv" of sorts in that there is a tube that goes to the carburetor to take care of crankcase emissions. This needs the breather to work correctly in order to function correctly. When the breather is plugged, it can cause a partial vacuum to occur in the crankcase which can draw gas from the carb into the crankcase.
Also a possibility is a float level too high. This can be caused buy a problem with the needle and seat as well as by a damaged or leaking float. You also did not mention how old or worn this engine is. Age and condition can also be a contributing factor.

Those are my thoughts. See what you find.

Float could be sticking or the needle seat is going bad or has rust/dirt in it. If it has a fuel pump the pump could be going bad also. Or even if it looks good the float maybe bad
