Rattling B&S single

Club has a Craftsman rider with a B&S single that I'm guessing is 10 or so years old and well used. The other day one of the club members was mowing and the engine started rattling. Not exactly sure how to describe it other than sorta high pitched rod knock.

We pulled it back to the shop, pulled the plug and could hear a metallic tick rocking the crank back and forth. Not being able to really tell anything decided to put it back up and wait till our resident hot rod guy could come listen to it.

Started it up and about half way back to the shelter it quit rattling and sounded normal. Engaged the deck and mowed a little just to see if it would come back but continued to run and sound like it always has.

Any ideas on what the rattle could have been?

Chunk of carbon came loose, few years ago my son started up one of my Onan engines on a wheel Horse. I happened to be there and it just hammered, told him to shut it off while I scratched my head and thought about it. I just used it a couple days before and it was perfect so I stared it up and sprayed a half a can of carb. cleaner down the carb. at 1/3rd throttle, shut it off and let set for a couple of hours and that cured it.

I had a Briggs 12 horse suck a screw from the carb into the cylinder. Sounded about like that. I pulled the head and got it out, but if it got
mangled to pieces it could have spit it out.

Nja, I had the exact same thing happen. A screw came out of the choke plate and settled on piston edge.I took head off and found it. 21hp twin briggs. Put in new screw with lock tite. Ed Will Oliver BC
